How does Wedding List Co differ from Myer or David Jones registry?
Over 80% of the Australian population now has internet access and more importantly are time poor. Myers and David Jones do not have an online purchasing option and this is the first area that Wedding List Co is superior. We also have our showrooms for the older couples who want to purchase gifts instore. With Wedding List Co being given the option of seeing an image and description of the gift and buying it online; or alternatively going in to the store to view and purchase the gift with cash, gives your guests a choice.
No doubt you have spent a great deal of planning to ensure your big day runs smoothly and it should be the same for your registry. Wedding List Co provides the service you need for your registry, from your personalised consultation, to your account manager or for those online an easy to use system for managing your registry. Just call us and compare our service to the department stores as you will be delighted by the benefits.
-
Are you thinking of asking for cash instead of gifts?
Wedding List Co recently undertook a survey of over 1000 guests to ask their thoughts on being asked for cash in lieu of a gift. The overwhelming response was that 87% of guests preferred to give a gift rather than cash and still take a gift of their choice anyway. However we recognise that the reality today is many couples prefer money towards their honeymoon or home deposit more than a household full of homewares, so we added the Contribution Registry. Guests can contribute any amount to the chosen ‘cash’ fund which the couple receives in full afterwards.
However when opting for this we strongly recommend mixing it with gifts to offer guests the choice. Remember – the registry is as much about your guests as it is about you, so make it as easy and appealing as possible by giving them the choice. Those happy to contribute money will do, and the rest (normally over 70%) will still be able to buy you a gift of your choice – that you will use and love.

-
What gifts can we choose from?
We have well over 5,000 options to choose from...Homewares, Artwork, Coco Republic Furniture, Wine, Experiences, Honeymoon Registry and Home Contribution. The list is endless, extensive, and gives you the widest choice of gifts in Australia. We operate just like the department stores in that we actually stock and sell all the gifts we offer and will deliver them to you after the wedding.
-
How does Wedding List Co differ from Online Registries?
Online only registries are limiting for many guests who would prefer to visit a store and see the gift before purchasing. This is why a registry with national stores and a website like Wedding List Co is a more popular choice – it suits the couple, and their guests.
Be careful of ‘faux’ online registries where you set up dummy gifts and receive money instead. Guests are not fooled and many are horrified when they find out afterwards that you were not in fact delivered the dinnerware they bought but instead that you received cash and used it to pay off wedding debts. Misleading your closest friends and family invited to your wedding is not a nice way to start married life.
The Etiquette of Wedding Registries
-
What is the best piece of advice about planning our gift registry?
Always think about your guests first – what would our guests be happy to buy us? We know that 87% of guests prefer to buy a gift, if you are looking for a cash or honeymoon registry choice add some gifts as well. Most importantly, ensure there is always a wide choice of prices – right up to the week before – so that guests buying at the last minute are not stuck with the kitchen utensils, toaster, or anything they don’t deem as ‘special’.
-
We have lived together for many years and don’t need any gifts. What do you suggest?
Many of us have seen our parents silverware and fine dining sets gathering dust in the cupboard. Registries today are about accessing beautiful gifts that you would normally budget for yourself. Even couples who say they don’t need anything often get swayed once they come into our stores and see the gorgeous goodies on display, “Oh hang on – a beautiful new throw for the sofa and a great set of BBQ tools would be nice”.
Wedding List Co is not just about the day to day homewares, we also offer a great range of unique gifts and experiences for the couple that have everything. What a perfect start to your married lives – reclining in their new Coco Republic armchair, admiring their new piece of artwork, while enjoying the wine in a Riedel glass – all purchased or at least contributed to by their guests. And what could be more personal and ever lasting then art?
We also offer a great range of unique gifts and experineces for the couple that have everything;
- Coco Republic furniture
- Art vouchers from a selection of leading galleries and
- Wine
-
We were thinking of having a wishing well, is this ok?
The wedding list is really as much about the guests as it is about you. Remember it is a gift not an expectation. Guests generally will want to buy you a wedding gift and a will buy off list or give nothing if they don’t like the gifts chosen or the request for cash.
However, all is not lost. Wedding List Co is the only registry that enables you to combine gifts and cash contributions on one registry. With our Contribution Registry you can create meaningful gifts such as a kitchen renovation, landscape gardening or a home deposit, click here for more details. There is a one off set up fee and the total amount collected (less service costs) by guests is given to you after the event.
The key here is to add some tangible gifts as well. This gives your guests the choice, and because it is all on the one list they do not have to go to different stores or websites to see the options.
-
Are wedding registries greedy or inappropriate?
Gift registries are standard practice in Australian weddings.
Anyone I’ve ever met who didn’t do a registry has always said afterwards they wished they had as they received a mixture of gifts that were not suited to their lives or were double ups. By the same token many guests we’ve spoken to who were invited to weddings that didn’t have a registry said they were really stuck with what to buy them. As one put it, “I’d hate to spend $200 on something and find they put it away in a cupboard”.
Having a registry gives your guests the choice, most guests will use and some guests will purchase something different off registry. We do know that most guests at every wedding always at least look at the list. That’s why if you do a list make sure there is a great choice of fun, unique and traditional gifts that will appeal to all your guests and most importantly, a great choice of prices.
If Great Aunt Sally finds it impersonal, she can still always bring a gift of her choice. If you are having a destination wedding or asking guests to travel, then a smaller selection of lower priced gifts are more appropriate. But again, many will not want to turn up having given nothing.
Setting Up Your Registry
-
When should I setup my Registry?
It’s a good idea to set up your wedding list about three months before your wedding or at the latest 2-4 weeks before your invitations go out.
You can set up your list yourself online, or come into a Wedding List Co showroom for a free consultation over a complimentary drink. Either way, your own personal consultant will be on hand in store or over the phone to guide you through the process.
-

This is your wedding, your show. That’s why our ultra cool website has been designed to put you in the driving seat. Set up and make changes to your list whenever you want. Wherever you want. Add new gifts. Change your mind (even after the big day). It’s up to you.
Choose from over 5,000 gifts and the option of a combined Contribution and Gift registry. In fact, if you’re running late with your gift list, Wedding List Co is the perfect solution. You can set up, choose gifts, and have guests buying immediately. Set up online now. -
What is the benefit of visiting a showroom for a consultation?
The difference between a cocotte and marmitout? Who knows and frankly, who has the time to find out. Time to call in the experts. Enjoy a private showroom consultation (champagne included of course) and get all the help you need. And with loads of samples to check out, you might find yourself getting truly excited about matching tableware for the first time. Really.
If you live near one of our showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth it’s definitely worth booking in for a consultation. Evening and weekend consultations are no problem. To book your free consultation call us now.
Of course, not everyone lives near a showroom (in fact, many of our couples are based outside of Australia) – our unique telephone consultation service has been designed for this purpose.
-
What is the most popular item people put on their registries?
Despite couples often saying they ‘have everything’, once our in store or over the phone consultants chat to them about their lifestyles and entertaining habits, we generally find they have a lot of the basics, but maybe not so many ‘special’ pieces.
A wedding list is the one time in your life you could upgrade to a better quality dinner set or some great wine glasses. Better quality doesn’t have to equal patterned or precious;
- It can be great quality white dinnerware that goes in the dishwasher by Jasper Conran for Wedgwood,
- Contemporary crystal glasses by Riedel or
- Fantastic cookware by Swiss Diamond
Dinnerware, glassware and cookware continue to be the biggest sellers on wedding lists, primarily because that’s what guests like to buy. Recently there is a growing trend towards couples registering for more fun and unique items such as Nintendo Wiis, ipods, and Plasma TVs but they are rarely the most popular choice by guests.
-
Is there a particular item you think all newlyweds should have?
If you like to cook you will really appreciate the difference a good set of knives make. All our knife blocks are currently up to 50% off recommended retail so you can get a great set for as little as $199, see here for more details.
Every couple should register one large photo frame for their favourite wedding photo – it’s always the first thing to get bought off a list. For contemporary tastes choose Corban & Blair, and for traditional tastes you can’t go past a silver plated Christofle frame, a ‘lifetime’ gift.
-
How do we tell guests about our list?
We recommend that you send our complimentary discreet Wedding List Co inserts with your wedding invitations. These elegant cards feature our website address, store addresses, phone number and guarantee that your guests know where your wedding list is, making life so much easier for them. They will appreciate not having to ring around to find out where your list is or make pot-luck guesses at what you want.
-
What do the complimentary insert cards look like?
Cards are classic and discrete white stock with black printing. The ribbon is embossed into the card (not in blue as in the pdf). Cards can be shipped for free Australia wide. There are separate cards with local contact details for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, WA and the rest of Australia.
View notification card.
-
What will my registry look like?
Your list has all the information your guests will need from a gift description, price and a colour image that can be enlarged. You can even add you own personalised message and image. The checkout process is quick and easy to use for your guests. View the sample list.
-
What type of gifts should you have so all your guests are satisfied?
Rule #1 – a big choice of prices. Guests generally spend between $100 to $200, but some people, especially relatives, will spend much more. So go on and put some expensive gifts on your list. You may think it’s a bit cheeky but couples are usually pleasantly surprised by people’s generosity. By the same token, is it important to ensure there are gifts under $100 for friends coming without a partner or with whom you are not as close.
Rule #2 – include unique gifts. Guests naturally want to buy you something special and some guests are determined to buy you something unique that will always make you think of them. These guests aren’t interested in dinner plates and may go off-list to get you that unique gift which you’ll only take out when they come over… To prevent yourself being lumbered with eight hideous vases that you can’t take back, make sure that your list includes as many special stand-alone gifts as possible. And use your Personal Message to make an impassioned plea for those dessert plates or contribution towards the Coco Republic furniture vouchers if that’s what you really want.
-
How many gifts should I include for 100 guests?
There is no exact science – have fun with your list and add what you love. Make sure you have plenty of gifts in different price ranges to suit all guest’s budgetsIt's better to start with a selection of the gifts you really want and need. Check your list about once a week to see what has been purchased and add more gifts as purchases occur closer to your wedding date.
-
I’m worried that if we put expensive items on our registry, people will think we’re asking too much. What is the etiquette for choosing your registry?
Providing a wide choice of prices is very important. Ensure there is always plenty of choice under $100, but equally that there is a selection over $200. You may be surprised how generous your guests will be. Having the ability to manage it online as with Wedding List Co means you can be adding and changing gifts right up to the wedding date. With a department store, you would have to go into the store and write all the barcodes down and wait a few days for them to be added.
What’s more, with Wedding List Co, if you do put a gift over $350 on your list such as a KitchenAid Stand Mixer or a Wusthof Knife Block – you can choose to split it into ‘shares’ so guests can buy just a portion of the gift. This is a great way to ensure you are more likely to get the one large gift you have your heart set on, and ensure your guests don’t feel they have to spend more than they would like.
As always though, make sure you balance the more expensive gift out with some smaller options for guests who won’t want to buy a share of something.
Managing Your Registry
-
How can we personalise our list?
Guests can read a message from you when they visit your list, your chance to thank them in advance for their purchase or as in most cases, display your hidden literary talents. You can even add a photo of yourselves. You can also mark gifts as favourites so your guests can see what you really have your hearts set on and split large gifts over $350 into shares.
-
What if I change my mind after choosing gifts?
So many decisions to make. Don’t worry if you can’t decide on your dream china right away, you can make changes at any time via your own personal login. Even better, if you notice that all the gifts under $100 (or over $200) have been purchased, you can add more at any time to ensure there is always a wide selection of gifts and prices for your guests – right up to the day of the wedding.
-
How will I know which guests bought which gifts?
You can access your Thank You Card list anytime, anywhere, via your personal login. You can even opt to receive an email every time a gift is purchased. There are no excuses for not having written your thank you cards quickly after the wedding. This list can be accessed right up until after the gifts have been delivered and will not change even if you make some final changes upon closing.
-
What if all our gifts don’t get purchased?
You are not obliged to buy any gifts not purchased.
-
What if we get double up gifts from guests who bring gifts on the day?
One of the best features of Wedding List Co is the ability to make changes after your wedding – allowing you to swap double up gifts brought to the wedding or complete settings of dinner or cookware. And if you need to spend additional money, you receive a 10% discount (this excludes electrical items, vouchers, and promotions. Sorry about that.)
-
How often should I check my list to see what has been bought?
You can opt to receive an email each time a gift is purchased, so you can keep up to date on who’s bought you what. Alternatively you can access your Thank You card list at any time detailing who, what, their address and message. Adding gifts in different price ranges should be done weekly in the few weeks before the wedding as more guests purchase gifts.
-
When should we close our list?
We suggest you close your list the week or so after the wedding once you’ve had a chance to open any gifts brought on the day. Leaving it too long increases the chance of certain items becoming unavailable. Your gifts won’t be organised for delivery until you close your list.
-
What if we’d like to buy items not purchased to complete a set?
After your event, we invite you to enjoy 10% off items remaining on your registry, as well as any items you wish to add. You may take advantage of this discount as many times as you would like, even on your friends registering with us in the future (excludes electrical items, vouchers and promotions).
-
Will my gifts be wrapped?
You can choose to have your gifts beautifully wrapped however most customers ask for our environmentally friendly bags developed by Wedding List Co, to keep and use at your convenience for packing, storage, moving, travelling... the uses are limitless. Given you’ve chosen the gift and seen the Thank You card list, the gift is not exactly a surprise anymore so the environmental benefits of not choosing wrapping far outweigh the unwrapping.
-
How will my gifts be delivered?
We offer delivery anywhere in Australia. If you live near one of our showrooms (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth) they will be delivered by our own drivers on a Saturday to save you staying home from work. Customers in other states or regional areas will be sent via courier.
-
How long will we wait until our gifts are delivered?
Because we allow you to makes changes after the wedding some of your gifts are custom ordered for you. We suggest you close your list the week or so after the wedding once you’ve had a chance to open any gifts brought on the day. Once done all the gifts will be delivered to your door approximately four to six* weeks after you close your list, giving you the perfect amount of time to make room for all the new gorgeous goodies and to get back from your honeymoon. This time will be less for smaller weddings or fewer gifts and is usually before you receive your photos from the photographer.
Any special order gifts such as Christofle or Legle de Limoge which come from Europe may take a little longer and this is denoted against any long lead time gifts on your list upon closing. These gifts will come separately after the rest of your gifts so as not to hold them up.
-
What if other registries promise to deliver faster?
Be wary of other registries that offer quicker delivery. This is only if you choose not to make any changes and you need to make this decision when you set up your registry when you don't realise that 99% of the time you will need to. The reality is when closing your registry most couples will need to make some changes. With changes or ‘exchanges’ it will take 10-12 weeks to receive your gifts from them. Without exchanges the first delivery of less than 80% of your gifts is 4-8 weeks – so WLC is faster than any other registry specialist, we guarantee it!
